Live Better and Stop the Heights Walmart?

I hope they at least recycle the yard sign too when this issue is long and forgotten like the other anti-development  NIMBY’s.  Maybe we can purchase our citywide mandatory yard waste biodegradable bags from the new Walmart.

Extreme Home?

Checked out the humongous 4500 sqft Extreme Home on Goodhope St. built in the last week.

Isn’t 7 days too fast build a custom home like this:

  • Shouldn’t the concrete foundation cure before loading it with the entire house structure and all those hundreds of volunteers scrambling around?
  • Aren’t the wood wall framing and blown cellulose insulation supposed to dry out before covering up with sheetrock to avoid mold growth?
  • Shouldnt the air conditioning supply and return ducts be sealed during the build to minimize pollutants into the HVAC system?
  • Aren’t wood floors supposed to acclimate to the air conditioned environment for 48 hours in which they will be installed to avoid expansion and contraction.

…and where is the matching 4 car garage?

Another building topping out

Spotted another tree placed on top of this steel frame building under construction on I-10 West.

img00576-20090129-1734

The tree, usually a small pine, is of Greek origin. Mythology, To appease the forest gods that the wood used has not been killed (destroyed) that is if a tree god were to fly over the location he/she, it would see the “tree top” still alive. And the tree isn’t placed on the house after construction; it’s placed on the roof after the roof is papered,(weather tight) and removed after the home is CO’ed (recieved its’ Certificate of Occupancy)

Poverty in Houston

Living on the side of I-10 and feeding off the drivers on the feeder lanes.

Walled town within Houston

A walled town of the high Andalusian plains in Southern Spain has been relocated to Houston.

Perhaps the developers will keep the gates open to the inner courtyards and plazas of the Caceres community to the rest of the surrounding Rice Military neighborhood to create the true feel of small Spanish towns that Caceres strives towards.

Aerial roundabout

Look up when you drive down San Jacinto Street in Downtown and you’ll spot this new roundabout walkway under construction right above the road.

STOP ASHBY HIGH RISE

I would be kinda spooked if this building with arms and teeth was looming above in my neighborhood too.

I spotted this work of art while driving tonight, at the corner of Sunset and Greenbriar.

Supposedly, this community doesn’t want the Tower of Traffic to be built near their neighborhood and have all the new low income apt and condo residents of the 23 story Ashby High Rise to driving thru their high dollar neighborhood. Yet they don’t complain to Rice about all the football season traffic, nor to the Houston Medical Center to stop building more facilities which in turn bring more traffic to the area as well.

I’m all for the increased diversity in Houston Neighborhoods, and you can see it in these images around Houston in this blog, if you are not, then you may want to spend more time at StopAshbyHighrise.org

On the roof

Its a bit difficult to walk on a 45degree pitched roof. I really wish their were more flat roof buildings in Houston so we could enjoy the view and the balmy breezes from the tops safely. And most importantly stay above the mosquitoes.
